Read About the Classic Subaru Sambar

Experience the Subaru Sambar, a cabover Kei truck and microvan. The passenger variant is known as the Subaru Dias Wagon.

Originally manufactured specifically for the Japanese market, it's Japan's first Keitora (軽トラ), which is shorthand for "Kei class truck." This model is still in production and is available in both microvan and Kei trucks (pickup style). It ensures that all Kei car guidelines are fulfilled.

Subaru no longer manufactures the Sambar in spite of it still being popular in the domestic market. Since 2012, the nameplate has been used on a rebadged Daihatsu Hijet. In a joint venture with Elcat Automotive, the Sambar has been produced in China as the [三八] and in Finland.

The Sambar has used the arear engine rear-wheel-drive format (with an optional 4WD capacity from 1980 onward) since its introduction in 1961. The first two generations used the air-cooled engine from the Subaru 360 while later generations used the water-cooled engine from the Subaru Rex, Vivio, and the Pleo.

This happened to be the first Kei truck that used a cabover design with the passenger cabin over the engine. In 1990 when engine regulations for displacement size were increased,  the 5th-generation Sambar was introduced. This is also where Sambar's engine was upgraded to 660cc.
